These Popular Carrots Were Just Recalled for Salmonella After Being Shipped Nationwide
Late this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that six carrot products that will be recognizable to many consumers have been recalled. The carrot recall occurred after the producer came to suspect the presence of Salmonella bacteria during an "internal company test."
Last Wednesday, Grimmway Farms—a southern California company producing 65 carrot products that are available through retail and hospitality—announced they were recalling six of their carrot products after they reportedly detected Salmonella contamination.
The products recalled were Bunny Luv Organic Cut and Peeled Baby Carrots, Bunny Luv Organic Premium Petite Carrots, Cal-Organic Organic Petite Carrots, Grimmway Farms Shredded Carrots, O Organics Organic Peeled Baby-Cut Carrots, and O Organics Organic Baby Rainbow Carrots. (Package sizes, UPC codes and best-by dates for each recalled carrot product are indicated in the chart below, published by the FDA.)
"The recall was initiated as a result of a routine, internal company test," Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby stated. "The health of our customers and the integrity of our products are our highest priorities, and we will continue to monitor and communicate as additional information is available."
They stated, "The products listed in the table below were shipped directly to retailers throughout the United States."
Their press release adds that in addition to the recalled products listed on this chart, "the company recalled certain shredded carrots and chopped (chunk) carrots that were sold to food manufacturers and food service distributors. All affected food manufacturers, food service distributors, and retail customers have been notified with much of the product having been recaptured before being available for consumption."
Grimmway Farms said they'd notified all customers who received the recalled carrots directly from the company and requested that they relay the information to their own customers.
For consumers, the company said: "Anyone who has the recalled product in their possession should not consume it and should destroy or discard it. Consumers with questions may contact our customer services desk at 1-800-301-3101 . . . or visit www.grimmway.com."
