Saving money is critical for grocery shoppers, especially since prices are higher than normal right now thanks to droughts, shipping delays, and other issues. Thankfully, one chain is making major moves to bring its low-cost items—which are around 45% cheaper—to more stores.

Lidl has around 11,200 stores in 32 countries, and last year the U.S. division announced a massive East Coast expansion. By the end of 2021, Lidl hoped to open 50 new stores in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. And the price tag was huge—right at $500 million.

The first Lidl store in the U.S. opened in 2017, and now there are more than 100, with new locations opening as we speak. After years of planning, a new store opened its doors on June 9 in Lawrence Township, N.J. Mayor Jim Kownacki, who attended the ribbon-cutting, said the town was proud to "welcome Lidl to Lawrence Township. It has been a long time coming."

Two additional stores opened on June 30 in Merrifield, Va. and Long Island, N.Y. To mark the occasion, customers received gift cards ranging from $5 to $100.

Lidl detailed the 50 new store locations in an August 2020 announcement about its expansion. However, the Long Island store wasn't on that list, so Eat This, Not That! reached out to Lidl for an update on the openings.

"Since announcing our 50 store expansion last August, we have opened 52 stores along the East Coast, including two that opened on Wednesday in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Islip, New York," Chandler Ebeier, a spokesperson for Lidl, said. "We are looking forward to continuing our expansion and offering our high-quality products and unbelievable prices in more communities over the coming weeks."

While most items are proven to be cheaper at Lidl, lots of healthy foods are available at affordable prices. Here's a list.
